Dark Roads

These men turn from the right way to walk down dark pathsProverbs 2:13 (NLT)

As my son and I were out walking one night, we looked down the street and saw a scene much like the one above. Streetlights offered dots of light all the way up the road, until the end of the street, where there were no more lights and nothing but darkness. I told him that without Jesus, the road we walk in this life is much like this road: There may be bright points on the way, but the path leads to darkness and disparity. Those bright points can represent many things: Happy moments, good relationships with family and friends, or maybe even good news concerning careers. While writing this, several spiritual representations were on my mind. Those bright spots could be representing Christians who have been placed in our lives to help point us to Christ, and the darkness represents the life we stray back in to if we reject God time after time, ultimately leading into a total darkness with no light in the inevitable Judgment we all will face. A final meaning draws me to Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (ESV) Jesus is the only bright point in our lives utterly darkened by sin. God shone His light to all of humanity when He decided, in the confines of infinity, to command His Son to suffer the punishment for all of mankind, who has walked off the lightened path into despair. Whatever darkness we may face in our lives, we know that God is sovereign over all, and is more than willing to shine a light to direct us back onto the proper path.
